Louis Armstrong - known as Satchmo and Pops - is probably the most famous of all the great jazz musicians of the 20th century. His personal musical ideals were more or less abandoned as early as the 1940s, yet he remained an admired figure throughout the remaining decades of his life.

His records from the 1920s had a lasting effect on the development of jazz music and even today these early creations are considered some of the best ever produced. His duets with Ella Fitzgerald are now classics and as late as in 1968 - when health problems had more or less brought his active career to an end - he obtained an enormous succes with “What a Wonderful World”. This song can hardly be categorized as jazz, although it is still very characteristic for Louis Armstrong with its positive and optimistic attitude.
