Andrea Vaccaro (b. Naples 1604, d. s.p. 1670)

San Gennaro, patron saint of Naples. Unsigned. Oil on canvas. 68×57 cm.

Judging from the style, the painting must be considered a late work by Vaccaro.

In Bernardo de Dominici's account of the life and work of Domenico Gargiulo it is mentioned that a certain Luigi Romeo was the owner of “due mezze figure dello stesso [by Vaccaro], una che rappresente S. Gennaro, l'atra una S. Agata di tanta belezza”. Literature: Bernardo de Dominici, “Vite de' pittori, scultori, ed architetti napoletani”, 1743, Vol. III, p. 199.
