The present study represents one of Lundbye's favourite motifs and is a good example of how he portrayed the Danish coastline. Lundbye spent 16–17 days on the Refsnæs peninsula in the summer of 1847, where he made several drawings and oil studies. Lundbye was very enthusiastic about the beautiful nature, which he spoke of with great delight to his friends. According to Karl Madsen, none of Lundbye's works brought him as much joy as the studies from Refsnæs. Madsen notes: "But among the drawings and the half-dozen painted studies, which were the result of his stay there, many are distinguished by such an emotional and characterful depiction of the unique nature of the peninsula that it will always be remembered and hardly ever surpassed; Lundbye has taken Refsnæs in possession as his artistic property”. Exactly how much Lundbye cared about his studies is revealed in a letter he sent to N.L. Høyen's wife after returning to Kalundborg: “I brought my drawings with me, my paintings will only arrive tomorrow, but there is so much of my life in these works that I assure you, I am childishly anxious that they should come to some harm; I would most of all prefer to check on them every evening and morning, as I usually do”. (Karl Madsen, Johan Thomas Lundbye 1818–1848, pp. 14–15).
