Buckingham Palace wasn't spared during the 'Blitz' - the term for the massive German attacks on London between September 7, 1940 and May 11, 1941. Rather than move away from the danger, King George VI (1895–1952) and Queen Elizabeth (1900–2002) decided, in order to show their solidarity with the Londoners, to remain at the palace during what was to be known as Britain’s ‘Darkest Hour’’. In the early morning of March 9, 1941, the subject of the offered photograph, the palace was hit, while the King and Queen were still asleep. Yet, by the intervention of fate, they both escaped the attack unharmed.
