Astrid Holm initially studies engineering, but interrupts her studies in favour of the Emilie Mundt and Marie Luplaus painting school and later the Academy of Fine Arts, from which she graduates in 1909. She is subsequently one of the first Danes to travel to Paris, where she stays from 1909–1914. Here she is part of the recognized international art scene and – as the only Dane – a student of Henri Matisse.
At the outbreak of the First World War in 1914, Astrid Holm is on a study trip to the Virgin Islands, after which she returns home. Back in Denmark, she stands out as an energetic and innovative cosmopolitan figure who, right up until her death, is deeply committed to improving educational and exhibition opportunities for female artists, while also involving herself in public debate. In 1916, she founds her own art school and in 1921 becoming the first female teacher at the Academy of Fine Arts, as head of a newly established weaving school.
In 2019–2020, she is presented at Øregaard Museeum in the exhibition “Astrid Holm & Co” together with works by her closest female artist friends: Ebba Carstensen, Vera Nilsson and Juliana Sveinsdottir.
