Provenance: Mr. Alfred Bramsen (1900). Among other things known for his work about Vilhelm Hammershøi produced together with Sophus Michaelis.

Karen Bramsen (1877–1970) was daughter of the author, dentist and art collector Alfred Bramsen (1851–1932). She married Gustav Falck, Art Historian and Director of Statens Museum for Kunst (The Danish National Gallery).

Another portrait of Karen Bramsen with her instrument was painted by Vilhelm Hammershøi 1898 in London.
