Børge Mogensen (b. Aalborg 1914, d. Gentofte 1972)

Unusual and rare asymmetrical table with top of Wawona veneer cut from a California pine with eight sculptural V-shaped cherry legs. Designed 1949. This example made 1950s by cabinetmaker Erhard Rasmussen. H. 63 cm. L. 226 cm. W. max. 97.5 cm.

Provenance: Consigned along with lot no. 914 and 1022.

Model presented at The Copenhagen Cabinetmakers' Guild Exhibition at Designmuseum Danmark, 1949.

This model is one of the most interesting and sculptural pieces of furniture designed by Børge Mogensen. The dramatic veneer combined with its irregular shape, and the low silhouette makes it stand out as a fine example of the ideals behind post-war Nordic design. Børge Mogensen here intended to make a table that could be used both as a worktable, a dining table as well as function as a table for special occasions, while at the same time bringing inside the forces of nature through the use of the dramatic Wawona veneer.
