A landmark in the history of chemistry.
Mendeleev, Dmitri Ivanovich: Osnovy khimii. [Principles of Chemistry]. St Petersburg: 1869–71. 2 vols. Richly illustrated and with one folding letterpress table. Bound with both half titles in cont. half calf. Some minor staining and one restored page with no loss of text. A minor tear in the folding table in part II, with no loss of text.
A fine and very well preserved and clean copy of the extremely scarce first edition of Mendeleev's seminal work in the history of chemistry.
The periodic table is printed on p. [IV] of the preface. The folding table, which appears in part II (1871), is an improved version of that which appears in the preface to part I (1869).
(2).
Provenance: The Danish book collector and Professor of mathematics, Christian U. Jensen.
Mendeleev's work on Osnovy khimii led him directly in March 1869 to his formulation of the periodic law and the periodic table, in which the elements were grouped by atomic weight and grouped according to their chemical and physical properties. He famously used his table to predict accurately the elements which later came to be called gallium, germanium, and scandium.
