Paul Fischer (b. Copenhagen 1860, d. Gentofte 1934)

Busy day at the flower market at Højbro Plads in Copenhagen. An elegant young woman with a Japanese parasol buying tulips. 1929. Signed Paul Fischer. Oil on canvas. 57×74 cm.

This painting contains everything we associate with “Copenhagen painter” Paul Fischer. First and foremost, an easily recognizable locality, namely Højbro Plads with Christiansborg and the castle church; in addition, the inhabitants of the capital: The well-dressed young ladies who buy flowers from the flower sellers from Amager, one with her bicycle the other with a Japanese parasol, a maid with two baskets filled with spring flowers, two messengers chatting and the old-fashioned horse-drawn carriage and the latest black Ford cars.
