Andres Haubert, an art critic at “Dagbladet”, wrote about the exhibition and the present painting on the 10th of February 1889: “I'm impressed among those paintings of primitive daily life to see such a refined painting: Niels the model is posed in his yellow oilskin dress and souwester for a woman in a black jacket and a light blue skirt, under which a shoe and a red sock can be seen. All the different colours mix together in an intriguing way against the monocrome grey floor and wall”.
The work was executed in autumn 1888, the year the couple was married and Oda is wearing a shiny wedding ring in the painting.
