Literature: Karl Madsen, “Johan Thomas Lundbye 1818–1848”, 1949. The illustration p. 227 is a similar landscape from 1846, without the female figure (K. M. 209). Karl Madsen describes this work as a study for the present painting (K. M. 210).

In Lundbye's travel diary from 16 april 1846, he mentions the Florentine landscape depicted in the painting: ''I have walked this path along the Arno on the way to Cascine on countless occasions, a beautiful road, lush trees with delightful nightingales in plenty.
