Faustina II, Junior, 169–175 AD, Aureus, C 168, RIC 704, Calicó 2071, 7.26 g, minute scratch in obverse right field - a brilliant strike with a wonderful high relief portrait of the wife of Marcus Aurelius
The reverse shows the seated Cybele or Magna Mater who was originally Phrygia's State deity but was adopted by the Greek. She was the goddess of nature and fertility and the ruler of wild beasts, and was often worshipped in wild, emotional, bloody, orgiastic and cathartic ceremonies.
