Anna Ancher (b. Skagen 1859, d. s.p. 1935)

Stine Bollerhus counts the money earned selling bread. C. 1880. Signed A. Ancher. Oil on canvas. 50×33 cm.

Anna Ancher has painted the motif twice. The Art Museums of Skagen have a version from 1879, which is signed Anna Brøndum (Inv. No. 1632). The present painting is signed Anna Ancher and must therefore have been painted after 18 August 1880, when Anna and Michael Ancher were married.

Stine and her husband Per Bollerhus were Skagen locals and some of the town's eccentrics. They lived in Østerby and made a living by bringing out bread from Saxild's bakery. Stine and Per Bollerhus often appear in the Skagen painters' works, and Anna Ancher has painted Stine several times.
