Louise Bonfils (b. Frederiksberg 1856, d. Copenhagen 1933)

“Bygevejr. Hornbæk”. A rainy day at Hornbæk beach. Signed and dated L. Bonfils 1921. Oil on canvas. 36×56 cm.

The painter of seascapes and plein air motifs Louise Bonfils was educated at The drawing- and arts and crafts school for women (Tegne- og Kunstindustriskolen for Kvinder), under Wenzel Tornøe and Hans Fischer, and at The Artists' Free Study School (Kunstnernes Frie Studieskoler) under the plein air painters Laurits Tuxen and P.S. Krøyer. She exhibited regularly at Charlottenborg, but not until 9 years after her debut in 1881, was she able to inscribe herself as a painter of seascapes at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts' School of Art for Women (Kunstakademiets Kunstskole for Kvinder) in 1890.

Bonfils went on a study tour from 1884 to 1885 in Southern Germany and Italy and later undertook several shorter travels to Paris, Dresden, The Netherlands, Belgium and Norway. The painting of seascapes and landscapes influenced by the plein air tradition preoccupied Bonfils through out her career, and as a female painter of seascapes she occupied a unique position in the Danish art world at the time. The present painting is a fine example of Bonfils painting “en plain air” as grains of sand has flown into the wet paint being a testament of the painting being executed a windy day at Hornbæk beach.

Exhibited: Charlottenborg 1922 no. 54.
