Rolex

A gentleman's wristwatch of 18k gold. Model Oyster Cosmograph, ref. 6263. Mechanical chronograph movement with manual winding, cal. 727. Champagne-coloured dial with gold hour markers and hands. Black calfskin strap with C-type buckle of gold plated steel. Watch diameter 37 mm. Circa 1970.

While many watch enthusiasts and collectors alike are aware of the many early Oyster Cosmograph variations, this example of an 18k gold reference 6263 is an absolute rarity. The reference 6263 was launched in 1970, equipped with the chronometric movement 727, but upon further inspection this example does not feature ‘’Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified’’ upon the dial. Very early variants of the 6263 were not certified by COSC, and therefore the ‘’Cosmograph’’ lettering isn’t placed above the lower sub-dial. Examination of previous non-COSC dial 6263 18k gold models sold at auction are similarly featured with serial numbers 2’330’546 (sold 2010), 2’330’445 (sold 2013), 2’330’469 (sold 2013) and 2’330’472 (sold 2015). The latest example, bearing the serial number 2’330’398 was sold in 2016. The present model is therefore one of the earliest known specimen with the serial number 2’330’391, and is furthermore equipped with early ‘’millerighe’’ screw-down pushers and correct bezel insert, launching this 6263 into the absolute apex of vintage Rolex collecting, with the addition of being fresh to market from the family of the original Danish owner.

Middle case no. 6263. Case back no. 6239.
