A German Renaissance silver beaker, of conical form, top rim engraved with arabesques, base rim with band of diamonds. The reverse engraved with initials ML. Maker Johan Jans. Hamburg town mark 1628–1643. Weight 120 g. H. 12 cm.
Provenance: The Danish Envoy and Consul General Hans Poul Hoffmeyer (1893–1962). Secretary of Legation in Vienna, Berlin, Moscow and Warzaw in the 1920s, later Counsellor of the Legation in Berlin, Paris, Turkey, Israel and Greece, and finally Consul General in Hamburg from 1954. Hoffmeyer's interest in collecting silver was pervasive and he acquired items in all the cities he lived. Thence by descent with residence in Denmark, until today.
Wear due to age and use. A few larger and some minor dents. Dented top and base rim. Front later engraved with initials in leaf cartouche.
