"(...) Perhaps Mertz was at his most sincere about his true nature in his so-called 'Cinematographic mobiles'? Painted wheels, wooden pins and pieces etc. hung in sewing threads and small seams, primitive like a puppet theatre, but small picturesque wonders that float, dangle and bring life onto the wall, both when they hang still and when they move. “Level-crossing gate” in orange and blue is certainly hard to take one’s eyes off.”
From the review “Cirkus Mertz” of the exhibition at Den Frie Udstilling in 1958 by an art critic under the signature H.E.
