Agnes Lunn (b. Rønnebæksholm 1850, d. Copenhagen 1941)

Study of female model. Signed and dated Agnes Lunn 4–1-81. Charcoal on paper. Sheet size 61×41 cm.

During her stay in Paris in 1880–81, Agnes Lunn studied at the Ecolé de Dessin et Peinture pour Femmes, an art school run by Madame Trélat de Lavigne. Académie Trelat had i.a. Jean-Leon Gérôme and Leon Bonnat as tutors and her school was popular with female Scandinavian artists including Bertha Wegmann and the Finnish artists Helene Westermark and Helene Schjerfbeck. The present study of the young model resting her head on her hands is dated 4–1-81. From the same session with Madame Trélat, an undated oil study of the same model with the same pose by Helene Westermark is known (Hagelstam auction November 1998 no. 110).

Agnes Lunn was both a painter and a sculptor. She studied under Otto Bache and F. C. Lund, before she in 1880, like many of the other artists of the time, went to Paris to study. Back in Copenhagen, she went to the Academy of Fine Arts' Art School for Women in 1889–90. Lunn is especially known for her depictions of animals - both as a sculptor and a painter. This model drawing is a rare example from her study time at the Académie Trelat in Paris.

C. L. David (1878–1960), the founder of the David's Collection, got a very close relationship with his godmother, Agnes Lunn, after his parents' early death, and she introduced him to the Danish artists of early modernism. The David Collection thus has a fine little collection of Lunn's works and at her death C. L. David instituted the 'Scholarship in Memory of the Sculptor Agnes Lunn'.
