Porcelain vase and cover, decorated with crackle glaze and gold, front with round cartouche depicting Aarhus harbour with a floating dock, the back with logo of HN Aarhus (Hans Nielsen, Aarhus Floating Dock). With inscription under the base ‘From the employees of A.F.O.M.’ (Aarhus Flydedok og Maskin Compagni) and along the foot rim 1883–3 January - 1953. Royal Copenhagen. Mid-20th century. H. 42 cm.
At the World Exhibition in Paris in 1925, the Royal Porcelain Factory presented a series of porcelain pieces designed by Thorkild Olsen and decorated using a new crackle technique, which attracted considerable interest. In the decades that followed, pompous lidded vases decorated using this technique and painted with sepia-coloured vignettes became popular gifts in the business world. The technique was inspired by early Chinese porcelain, and Georg Thylstrup, Oulf Jensen and Thorkild Olsen, among others, developed the sought-after style.
