Anna Smidth (b. Rønnede 1861, d. 1915)

A landscape with Roman ruins. Signed with monogram. Gouache and watercolour on paper. Visible size 32.5×53 cm.

Anna Smidth studied at Marie Luplau and Emilie Mundt’s drawing school. In 1885, she was hired as a porcelain painter at the Royal Danish Porcelain Factory, and she worked here for 30 years. She decorated vases, pots and plaques with landscape and flower motifs inspired by Japanese art. Anna Smidth traveled to Italy several times, where she painted landscapes, and the present work is presumably made on one of these trips. She also traveled to Germany, Jämtland, Svinkløv and North Zealand, where she painted landscape motifs.

Anna Smidth participated in several exhibitions, among others The Nordic exhibition of Industry, Agriculture, and Art of 1888, the World's fair in Paris 1889, the World’s fair in Chicago 1893, where she received a medal, the Women’s Exhibition (Kvindernes Udstilling fra Fortid og Nutid), and the Women Artists’ Retrospective Exhibition (Kvindelige Kunstneres Retrospektive Udstilling) in 1920 in Copenhagen.
