Jakob Danielsen (b. Disco Island 1888, d. Qeqertarsuaq 1938)

Three compositions in the form of Greenlandic landscapes. Signed resp. J.D. and Jakob Danielsen, one with “11. fabruar 1925, Godshavn” (11th February 1925, Godshavn). Water colour and pen on paper. Sheet size 9×14, 17,5×24,5 and 19×31.5 cm. Unframed. (3)

Provenance: Bodil Kaalund (1930–2016), thereafter in the possession of the family.

Jakob Danielsen was a Greenlandic seal hunter who depicted the nature and life of Greenland in his watercolors and drawings. In the 1947 edition of Weilbach’s Dictionary of Artists, volume 1, he is described as one of the most significant among the native artists. After Danielsen’s early death in 1938, part of his work was exhibited at the National Gallery of Denmark in 1941, the same year the collection of about 300 drawings and watercolors was transferred to the Ethnographic Department of the National Museum.

Condition

Largest composition with folding/handling marks. Medium composition with minimal marks on the corners.
