'CHURCHILL MEETS ROMMEL (THE DOG)'. An original b/w press photograph of British Prime Minister Winston Churchill (1874–1965) in conversation with General, later Field Marshal, Bernard Law Montgomery (1887–1976). On Montgomery's lap his spaniel, 'Rommel'. Back with agency stamp (International News Photo), handwritten notes and numbering in red. Oak wood frame and double glazing. Visible size 21.5×16.5 cm. Frame size 27×22 cm.

During World War II Montgomery kept several dogs, of which two became more famous than the others, namely the spaniel puppies 'Hitler' and 'Rommel'. The latter can in this photograph be seen sitting on his master's lap. The meeting between Churchill and Montgomery - and 'Rommel' - took place at the British Normandy headquarters at Château de Creullet on August 7, 1944, some two months after D-Day - the Normandy Landings. The photograph, together with the headline 'CHURCHILL MEETS ROMMEL (THE DOG)', could be seen on the front pages of British and American newspapers the following August days.

Condition
