The oxblood glaze, which together with the Sung glaze became one of Salto's favourite glazes, was developed by Patrick Nordström at Royal Copenhagen in 1914. The chemical composition of the glaze meant that it was difficult to use since the influence of heat and later smoke in the kiln was crucial to how the glaze, which is also Chinese inspired, developed. The distinctive nature of the oxblood glaze can especially be seen in the strong texture and colour-saturated appearance in which turquoise-green elements often occur as a result of the chemical composition. In Klingen, 1942, Axel Salto writes: “The budded style, on the other hand, is not based on isolated observations of fruits and conchs. It depicts a movement, a growth. It is therefore the budding branch that becomes the naturalist model of this style, the Growth-wonder, due to an inner pressure in things, something that wants to break out. In that way, vases have been made that seem to grow on the spot, it wrestles in them, and this movement on the sides of the vase also makes the glaze come alive as it is forced to proceed or manoeuvre around”.
