Morten Underbjerg (b. 1993)

“Turpas (Duel)”, 2023. Signed, titled and dated on the reverse. Oil on canvas. 109×80 cm. Unframed.

The Danish artist Morten Underbjerg (b. 1993) lives and works between Copenhagen, Denmark, and Bergen, Norway. He holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Academy of Fine Arts - Department of Contemporary Art at the University of Bergen, Norway (2018–2021) and is currently pursuing his MA at the same institution. Underbjerg explores connections between art, the experience economy, and the transcendental. His practice primarily focuses on painting, installation, and performance. By investigating phenomena such as wild blossoming, ecstatic folk dance, and amusement parks, he delves into themes such as dissolution, transformation, transition, and boundaries. Through his works, Underbjerg presents a network of narratives that point towards the ecstatic and communities. For the auction Underbjerg has donated the piece “Turpas (duel)”. The work is part of a series of works titled “Turpas”. Here, the relationship between the abstract and the figurative is explored. In the painting, one sees a color field with references to the abstract expressionist movement. The field is interrupted by a stroke line depicting a joust between two knights, suggesting themes of power and entertainment.
