C. W. Eckersberg (b. Blåkrog near Aabenraa 1783, d. Copenhagen 1853)

“En Fiskerbaad sejlende i godt Vejr med gunstig Vind, Ejerne er i Trætte om, hvem der skal styre Roret”. A fishing boat sailing in good weather with favorable wind, the owners disagree who is going to steer the tiller. Signed and dated E 1833 on the back of the zinc plate. Oil on metal (zinc). 35×24 cm.

Emil Hannover, A Catalogue Raisonné of the Works of C. W. Eckersberg no. 474, reproduced p. 237 and mentioned p. 246, where Eckersberg's way of painting the boat is praised (in Danish): "... The boat, which is so beautifully painted in its shortened form and lies so excellently on the water”.

C. W. Eckersberg writes in his diary 19 June 1833 (in Danish): “Completed a small painting (on zinc) depicting a fishing boat sailing in good weather with favorable wind, the owners disagree on who is going to steer the tiller”. And 6 July 1833 (in Danish): “Councillor Koch came by for a visit, he later picked up the small painting of Fishermen disagreeing about who is going to steer the tiller”.

Provenance: Acquired by Court architect J. H. Koch (1787–1860) directly from the artist (see the above quote from the diary). The painting has passed from father to son until today: Supreme Court judge Peter Koch (1832–1907), engineer Svend Koch (1867–1953), architect Mogens Koch (1898–1992). Hence the painting has never been on the market before.
