Axel Salto (b. Copenhagen 1889, d. Frederiksberg 1961)

A unique and very large stoneware vase. Modelled with relief motif of Medusa head and stylized decor. Decorated with Oxblood glaze. Signed Salto. Royal Copenhagen. Made 1958. H. 46.5 cm. Diam. max. 29.5 cm.

Provenance: Private collection, Denmark. Acquired directly from Royal Copenhagen.

The geometric shape of the vase is unusual for the ceramic works by Axel Salto, and it calls to mind the nature morte still life paintings by Danish artist Vilhelm Lundstrøm (b. 1893, d. 1950). This is maybe not so strange given their formative years as artists, they both spent them as part of the artists' union “De Fire” and the periodical “Klingen”. The present vase is the only known piece made of this model and by all accounts unique. It exemplifies Axel Salto's power to unite a modern design language with the figurative and mythological motif.

This lot is subject to Artist's Royalty.
