873/121

A set of ten almost identical Swedish Empire white painted chairs, the backs carved with decoration inspired by the antique. Stockholm, late 18th century. (10)

The chairs are made after design by the Stockholm chair-maker Ephraim Ståhl, (1767–1820). This type of chair was made in the transition between the late Gustavian period and the Swedish Empire style. The design is predominantly Neoclassical. His furniture was in very high demand, and his workshop furnished numerous castles and manor houses with chairs and couches.
