Ingrid Linnea Ruin (b. 1881, d. 1956, Finnish painter)

Study of a seated model in red. Unsigned. Verso inscribed I. Ruin. Oil on canvas. 58×42 cm.

After preliminary studies at The Finnish Art Society’s Drawing School in Helsingfors, from 1897–1901, the Finnish artist Ingrid Ruin attended The Art Academy in Copenhagen from 1901–1903. Later she studied under Albert Edelfelt (1854–1905) and from 1905 to 1911 under Anders Zorn (1860–1920), for whom she also served as an assistant. Ruin continued her work on study trips to Germany, France and Italy. Her style and choice of motifs is related to that of Zorn - the intense colours and voluptuous women in the Swedish nature are predominant in her production. During her lifetime she exhibited widely in Europe in Finland, Stockholm, Saint Petersburg, Copenhagen, Oslo, Berlin and Rome. In 2005 a retrospective exhibition of her work was shown at Riihimäki Artmuseum, just as she is represented in several museums in Finland.
