Novgorod School, 16th century

A highly important Russian church icon depicting The Descent from the Cross. The crucified Christ is lowered from the cross by Joseph from Arimathea. Mary reaches out for her son and their cheeks meet. Three myrrh-carrying women can be seen behind Mary, and the Pharisee Nicodemus kneels at Christ's feet. Nicodemus is pulling nails from Christ's feet and behind him stands the young John asking Nicodemus to be careful. Tempera on wood panel with a kovcheg. Novgorod School, 16th century. 90.5×66 cm.
