Sophie Calle (b. Paris 1953)
Untitled, from the series “Take Care of Yourself” with ballet dancer Marie Agnes Gillot. Signed and numbered on the reverse of frame S. Calle, 12/30. C-print. Visible size 24×30 cm. Framed by CircaD encadrement, Paris.
Provenance: This video still from “Take Care of Yourself, 2004–07, featuring Marie-Agnes Gillot, lead dancer at Opera de Paris, 30 seconds” was bought by present owner at Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in connection with the exhibition “Sophie Calle” in 2010, where the artist had donated thirty works for sale.
“Take Care of Yourself [...] was one of the high points of the Venice Biennale in 2007, where it was France’s contribution to the national pavilion. For this work Calle invited a large number of career women – from the ballet dancer to the lawyer – to apply their various professional skills to the personal interpretation of an e-mail where the artist’s lover breaks off their relationship. The women’s reactions are poetic, touching and humorous statements that together form a monumental installation.” Excerpt from Louisiana Museum of Modern Art's exhibition description, 2010.
