Adolf Loos (b. 1870, d. 1933)

Low “fireplace” armchair of stained oak. Seat and back with brown artificial leather. Designed approx. 1925. This example made approx. 1930 by F.O. Schmidt, Austria. H. 67 cm. W. 57.5 cm. D. 52 cm. Seat: H. 30 cm.

Adolf Loos used this model in 1931–32 for the apartment of Helena and Hugo Semler in Pilsen, Czech Republic where the chair was placed in front of the fireplace. The model was also presented at the Wiener Werkbundsiedlung in 1932, house no. 49.

Condition

Overall good original condition. Patina due to age and use. Upholstery with surface crackles, marks and scratches, few minor chips in surface. Several nails missing. Frame with somewhat unvene patina including marks, scratches and few small chips.
