2547/5004

Sweyn Forkbeard, 985–1013, Half-bracteate, ca. 995, 0.28 g, Hbg. 4, Malm. KG 13, Cross B1 (32:5) / Cross D (32:23) – a beautiful example of this extremely rare type, of which only a few are known in private collections (even missing from the Bruun Collection), ex. Count Lerche, ex. H.P. Holgersen.

This particularly intriguing “steped cross” type stands out as the only known Nordic half-bracteate believed to be directly inspired by a Byzantine prototype. It has long been a subject of scholarly debate. Malmer, in her dissertation, argued that this issue represents Sweden’s earliest coinage. However, the prevailing consensus among modern researchers is that it is more likely an East Danish (Scanian) issue struck during the reign of Sweyn Forkbeard.
