Original black-and-white press photograph from the Allied liberation of Rome in June 1944. Back with agency stamp, restriction stamp, and stamped dates for newspaper publication (June 16, 1944, June 13, 1946). Oakwood frame with double glass. Visible size 22×16 cm. Frame size 32×26 cm.

The fall of Rome in early June 1944 was an important turning point in World War II, when Allied forces captured the Italian capital after overcoming German defenses at Monte Cassino and breaking through the so-called Gustav Line. Before the arrival of the Allies, Rome had been declared an ‘open city’, which meant demilitarization in order to spare the inhabitants and the many historical monuments.
