L. A. Ring (b. Ring 1854, d. Roskilde 1933)

The artist's wife Sigrid sewing in the lamplight. Karrebæksminde. Unfinished. 1898. Signed L. A. Ring. Oil on panel. 38×52 cm

Exhibited: Rønnebæksholm Kunst- og Kulturcenter, “L. A. Ring 150 år - motiver fra Sydsjælland”, 2004 no. 85.

Ordrupgaard, “L. A. Ring. Mellem lys og mørke”, 2016 no. 30, reproduced. p. 100, fig. 85.

Provenance: The landscape painter Rudolf Bertelsen. Bruun Rasmussen auction 607, 1994 no. 65. Concertmaster Kai Laursen.

Ring has probably been painting it in the fall of 1898, when he and Sigrid moved from Karrebæksminde to Frederiksværk. It may have been forgotten while they were moving houses, and Ring has later given it to Rudolf Bertelsen?

Sigrid Ring is seen in the same dress as in “Lampelys. Interiør med kunstnerens hustru. Karrebæksminde”, 1898. (Lamplight. Interior with the artist's wife. Karrebæksminde“) at the National Gallery of Denmark (inv. no. KMS3959). The yellow ”opulent" lampshade is also recognizable in both paintings.

On the wall in the back are several paintings by Ring recognizable. An early portrait of his father, “En pottemager ved sit arbejde” (A potter at his work sitting in the attic modeling handles on a jar) from 1896 and “Teglværksarbejdere” (Brickworkers) from 1892, which today belongs to Vejen Art Museum.
