I. L. Jensen (b. Copenhagen 1800, d. s.p. 1856)

Still life with a bouquet of flowers in a Greek vase on a marble ledge, in the foreground exotic conches. C. 1838. Signed I. L. Jensen. Oil on canvas. 84×67 cm.

Exhibited: Øregaard Museum, Hellerup, “Dansk blomstermaleri - J. L. Jensen og hans kvindelige efterfølgere”, 29 September 2006–4 February 2007, no. 87.

Nivaagaard Malerisamling, “Blomstermaleren J. L. Jensen. Mellem kunst og natur i guldalderen”, 2018, s. 309.

The present painting is a fine example of how masterfully I. L. Jensen could reproduce all types of flowers to make them appear like in nature. The pink roses, the orange garden nasturtium and the red lilies are to be mentioned. In addition Jensen has found some rare conches that form a small still life in the front of the sill. The Greek vase is probably made by Peter Ipsen (P. Ipsens Enke), who later opened a shop of his own in Bredgade 33, now the saleroom of Bruun Rasmussen. The motif on the vase is after the Danish sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen's relief “Cupid riding on a lion”.
