Anna Ancher (b. Skagen 1859, d. s.p. 1935)
Purchasec by Statens Museum for Kunst in November 2011.
“Fru Brøndum i den blå stue”. The painter's mother Mrs Brøndum in the blue sitting-room. Signed and dated A. Ancher 1909. Oil on canvas. 37×57 cm.
Exhibited: Herning Kongrescenter, “Skagen i Herning”, 2002. Arken, “Skagensmalerne - i nyt lys”, 2008 no. 9. Arken, “Anna Ancher”, 2011 no. 88. At the two Arken exhibitions the work was titled: “Fru Brødum skriver” (Mrs Brøndum writing), although it rather looks as if the old woman is reading.
Anna Ancher felt great affection for her mother, Ane Hedvig Brøndum, which is evident in the portraits of her. In the present one the old woman is depicted while reading in the blue sitting-room. Her back is supported by a large white pillow that is contrasted by her black cloak. The sunlight is brightening the walls that glow in strong colourful surfaces in blue, red, yellow and green. Anna Ancher's brillant ability to catch the impressiontistic light and create colouristic masterpieces is apparent in the work here.
