An original b/w silver gelatin press photograph of British Prime Minister Winston Churchill (1874–1965) leaving 10 Downing Street in the spring of 1943. Back with agency stamp, handwritten layout instructions in red and green as well as glued-on news telegram dated January 30, 1965 (Churchill died on January 24, 1965 and was buried on January 30). Double glazing and oak wood frame. Visible size 23×19 cm. Frame size 35×29 cm.
According to legend, the V-sign was originally the English archers' way of taunting the French during the Battle of Agincourt in 1415. It is said that the archers (longbowmen) were in the habit of raising the index and middle fingers of their right hand to show that they had not yet been captured by the French. Capture usually resulted in the archers having the fingers on their right hand cut off.
