“Floating #12”, 2018. Signeret. Pigment print på Tirages Baryté, 1/5 + 2 AP. 53×40

The “Floating” series takes its departure in photographs taken in the Parisian neighbourhood of Stalingrad, which in 2016 saw two thousand migrants living in the street. For two months Nikolaj Bendix Skyum Larsen went to this area to speak with people living there and to make a visual response to the inhumane situation. He took a series of photographs of people who were completely covered with blankets, and imagined that the moments where migrants are able to sleep were the only parts of their daily routine where they could ease their exhausted minds and bodies and metaphorically float away from their hopeless situation. Each covered person is removed from their context in the street of Paris and placed to levitate in a void. The blankets are often adorned with patterns, words or symbols that contribute their own narratives to the images and perhaps to the people behind the covers. A person is sleeping under a Union Jack flag hinting at a desire to get to Britain, two people sharing a Spiderman sleeping bag making the western superhero appear deflated and deconstructed. A person’s blanket looks like a leaping tiger, another person’s sleeping bag has imagery of migrating penguins, while two people are sleeping under a blanket adorned with flowers - their positions make them resemble a butterfly in flight.

A selection of 10 “Floating” images was part of the Tunisian Pavilion in Venice Biennale 2017. Another 12 images from the series were part of the artist’s solo exhibition in Galeria Presença, Porto in 2018. In the spring of 2019 Larsen showed 18 images from the series in an exhibition at the British School at Rome. In October 2019 Larsen was invited to present the“ Floating” series to participants in Morten Goll’s Democracy Class at Trampolinhuset. It was an incredibly touching and inspiring ‘workshop’ and it is for that reason I donate a “Floating” image to the auction.
