Alfred Gregory: A large signed black-and-white photograph of the New Zealand mountaineer Sir Edmund Hillary (1914–1986) on his way to the top of Mount Everest in the spring of 1953. Photo size 35×27.5 cm. Frame size 43×33 cm.

Edmund Hillary was - together with his friend, the Sherpa Tenzing Norgay (1914–1986) - the first man to climb Mount Everest. The two men reached the peak of the almost 9,000 meter high mountain on May 29th 1953. After this acchivement Edmund Hillary participated in numerous other expeditions and he climbed 10 other peaks in Himalaya during the 1950s and 1960s. In 1958 he took part in an expedition to the South Pole and in 1977 he and others followed the Ganges River from its mouth to its source. In the 1980s he served as the New Zealand ambassador to India.
