Unknown photographer: An original American b/w press photograph of the ocean-going miniature submarine Alvin DSV-2, built in 1964 by Litton Industries, California on behalf of US Navy. Back with related newspaper notice, cropping instructions and date of publication (May 22nd 1964). Photo size 19.5×15 cm. Frame size 43×33 cm.

At the time of its emergence in 1964 Alvin DSV-2 represented a quantum leap within the development of miniature submarines. The vessel could contain a crew of three men and it was - successfully - tested down to a depth of 6,500 metres, a place where the physical pressure is extreme. Should an accident occur in deep waters, the submarine was able to shed its titanium front part and thereby bring the men unharmed to the surface.

Alvin DSV-2 obtained world fame in 1986, when it was sent down to explore the vreck of Titanic, sunken 600 kilometres south of Newfoundland, Canada in 1912. The depth is here 3,800 metres.
