Astrid Noack (b. Ribe 1888, d. Copenhagen 1954)
Seated female. Signed Noack. Pencil on paper. Sheet size 51×31 cm.
Astrid Noack is a master at creating sculptures where the form and the simplicity of the sculptural compositions are key components. Noack's artistic interest is awakened within the Danish folk high school environment around Vallekilde where she is educated as one of the first female sculptors. In addition, Noack attends the Scandinavian Academy in Paris. Her time in Paris is of great importance to her oeuvre, and she lives in the city for 12 years.
The present work is extremely interesting to consider in relation to Noack's other sculptural work. This drawing is to a lesser extent stylized in its expression compared to her sculptures. Yet Noack's trademarks are present and evident in the composition. In addition, Noack is the only female visual artist represented in the Danish cultural canon from 2004. This induction shows that her influence on and significance for Danish art history has actually been recognized unlike so many of her female colleagues.
