Baron von Bolten was originally a cellarer from Bremen who became rich in Denmark. He was a businessman trading with both The West Indies and India. In the winter he lived in Copenhagen in a stately house in Gothersgade named Bolten's Gaard. In the summer he stayed at Sorgenfri Castle which he bought in 1783. He also bought several other estates outside Copenhagen. Unfortunately, he went bankrupt, and Sorgenfri was sold to heriditary prince Frederik, and Bolten's Gaard was sold to von Boltens associate.
