An early Dutch baluster maiolica jug decorated in blue, yellow and brown with stylised tulips and a cartouche in which the year 1558, pewter lid; possibly workshop of Adriaen Bogaert in Haarlem. H. 22 cm.

Provenance: Danish private collection

The first tulips were introduced to Europe in 1554 by Ogier Ghiselin de Busbecq (1522 in Comines – 28 October 1592). It is very rare to find tulips depicted on 16th century European ceramic.
