Constantin Hansen (b. Rome 1804, d. Frederiksberg 1880)

“En hyrdedreng fra Pompeji”. A shepherd boy from Pompeii. Signed Const. H. Oil on canvas 40×28 cm.

A book by H. P. Rohde, “En guldaldermaler i Italien”, 1977, goes with this lot. The “Shepherd boy” is reproduced on the cover of the book.

The National Gallery of Denmark owns a smaller and almost identical version of “a shepherd boy” bought directly from Constantin Hansen in 1879. The shepherd boy is a model for a figure in “Cerestemplet i Pæstum” (The Ceres temple in Paestum) dated 1841 (Emil Hannover no. 226).

Provenance: The present painting was purchased directly from Constantin Hansen by the current owner's family for DKK 300.
