Nicholas II, 1894–1917, 37 ½ Roubles – 100 Francs 1902, St. Peterburg, F 170, Bitkin 315 (R2), Severin 578 (RRR), Uzdenikov 4212 (RRR), 32.28 g - a superbly pedigreed and truly wonderful prooflike example of the highest denomination coin ever minted by Russia.

This issue consisting of only 225 pieces should be considered as a presentation type struck for the Czar to be given as special gifts. 25 of these were reserved for the Emperor's brother-in-law, Grand Duke Alexander Mikhailovich (1866–1933)

Ex. Bernhard F. Brekke (1914–2011). As a collector Brekke was one of the foremost connoisseurs of Russian coins in the 20th century, and within the field of Russian Numismatics he made several valuable contributions including the outstanding monograph, “The Copper Coinage of Imperial Russia 1700–1917”.

Ex. Gaston DiBello (1892–1967), Stack's, October 24–25, 1969, lot 732 (original envelope enclosed). DiBello, a prominent Italian born industrialist from New York, was a keen numismatist who received several prices for his exhibitions, and the auction was at the time of sale considered to be the most important offering of quality gold world coins offered in the United States since World War II. He was also one of the few who attended the famous sale of King Farouk's collection in Cairo 1954.
