“Miserere”, 1922–1927. Portfolio with 58 gravures. All print signed GR 1922 and GR 1923. Engraved by the artist. Printed in the period 1922–1927 by Jacquemin, Paris, on the initiative of Ambroise Vollard, who kept prints until his death. In 1948 the portfolio was published by Edition de l'Étoile Filante, Paris. This is #155 of a total edition of 425 + 25. Aquatint, photogravure, drypoint, roulette, etching. Sheet size: 65,5×50,5 cm. Loose leaves as issued in the orig. half vellum binding. In orig. box.

The French painter, draughtsman and printer Rouault's Miserere series, first titled Miserere et Guerre (Mercy and War), was commissioned in 1916 by the important art dealer Ambroise Vollard (1865–1939). Originally planned as a two-volume book comprised of 50 prints each, Miserere was only partially realized with 58 prints published in 1948. The series which he exhibited in 1948 illustrates man's cruelty to man, relates human suffering to the passion of Christ, and speaks to the redemption and salvation that can be achieved through that experience.
