The painting was painted to carpenter Lauritz Lassen and his wife, with whom many Danish artists lived during their period of studying in Berlin. The girl in the middle of the painting is Ella Frijs born in Copenhagen in 1890. She grew up with the family Lassen in Berlin, and here she met her future husband dr. jur (LLD) Andreas Valentin Karberg. He was a prefect (amtmand) in Ringkøbing 1926–1951.
