Palle Suenson (b. 1904, d. 1986)

Two oak stacking chairs, with resp. three and four transverse flat back sticks, seats covered with braided patinated leather straps. Manufactured and marked with label by Holger Knak Jensen, Aarhus. Upholstery made by upholsterer Anton Sølvsten, Aarhus. (2)

Around 30 corresponding chairs where made for the administration building of Aarhus Oil Factory in 1942, which was designed by Palle Suenson. He both designed the buidling and the inventory.

In the same periode Arne Jacobsen and Erik Møller designed Aarhus Cityhall, where Hans J. Wegner was hired to design furniture and inventory.

The furniture for Aarhus Cityhall was made by various local cabinetmakers and furniture factories: Holger Knak Jensen, I.C.A. Jensen, Axel I. Sørensen, Mikael Laursen and Planmøbel. The upholstery was made by Anton Sølvsten.

These present chairs have many parallels to Hans J. Wegner's Aarhus Cityhall chairs and at a later point Planmøbel's office series. The slats in the back of the chair, however, does not look like anything, Wegner has designed.

When Hans J. Wegner in 1946 moves to Copenhagen, he is hired by Palle Suenson. However, whether a collaboration between the two already existed in the early 1940's can not be proven.
