Portrait of the vicar Niels Munk Plum (1803–1865). 1831. Unsigned. Inscribed on the back: Malet af Bendz. (Painted by Bendz). Oil on canvas. 16×13. Period frame.

Niels Munk Plum (1803–1865) was vicar in the parishes Roslev-Rybjerg (1830–1845). Son of the Bishop of Funen diocese Frederik Plum (1760–1834) and wife Marie Sophie Plum. (1765–1829) The bishop was also painted by Wilhelm Bendz in 1831 (The Hirschsprung Collection, A Catalogue Raisonné of the Works of Wilhelm Bendz no. 78). Bendz left Copenhagen in 1830 to begin his journey abroad. The trip went over Funen, where he had received a number of portrait commissions from the nobility and also from the bishop in Odense. These commissions were to help him to finance his trip abroad. The portrait of the young man in a priest's dress was painted shortly after he was ordained a priest in 1830.

Provenance: In the Plum family to this day.
