Poul Henningsen (b. Ordrup 1894, d. Hillerød 1967)

“PH-Four Shade Lamp”. Rare 4/4½/4 pendant, bayonet socket house and canopy of browned brass with original golden bronze copper shades. This example manufactured approx. 1930s by Louis Poulsen. Diam. 43 cm.

Provenance: Private Danish collection.

Model presented at the exhibition “Modern Homes” in Forum, 1931.

Literature: “Light Years Ahead”, referred to and ill. p. 242.

Poul Henningsen must have considered a four shade lamp as early as 1926 as a lamp of this type is mentioned in a 1927 patent application. The four shade lamp was meant to be suspended high up as an alternative to the chandeliers which were still the most prevalent form of domestic lighting and which PH did not like. Personally, Poul Henningsen was most taken with the four shade bronzed copper version. It was the one which best met his criteria. It creates an illuminated area below which marks its position in the room while the top shades cast a soft, dimmed light on the walls. It is very rare to find this pendant with the original golden bronze on the copper shades, and probably the first time ever Bruun Rasmussen Auctioneers offers one with the original golden bronze for sale.
